Windows, viruses & vulnerability. .

Viruses . . . . . . . Anyone who has ever used a computer knows there exists things called viruses and their effect on the user machines range from slowing the perfomance of the computer to causing complete mayhem to your files and data. . . . . Both cases are true but the whole idea of existence of viruses is really not sensible. . . . . What I mean is . . . . These viruses only affect Windows based systems with both mac and linux being virtualy virus free . . . The conspiracy theorist in me tends to think the flaws are let to be so that u wil have to run back to them for updates and upgrades. . . At a fee ofcourse. . . . .Ofcourse windows’ popularity could explain the constant attraction for malware makers to create programs to compromise systems. At the end of the day I still use a windows based system mostly because I dont have limitless bandwith for downloading updates and programs for linux based systems. . . . . It is much easier/cheaper/ to get the programs from colleagues. . . . Currently waiting to try out windows 7 . . . . . . Hope it will be more secure. . .

No way Bill n company would create viruses to attack their own systems so tat guys would hav to go back to them. Consider REPUTATION. Thats one o t most valued aspects o any business…hence y even wen banks get hackd they neva even report to cops coz then word can leak n of course they’ll lose bizna. So, look at bill n company…they’ve lost mo bizna from t attacks on their systems than gain from updates n wat not…

they dont have to make the viruses. . . .. they just leave the flaw there for someone to find and exploit. . .. just my thoughts. . . .

Ok! the whole thing about viruses and OS’s may have some element of “conspiracy” in them; I agree, but then in Software Eng. Most software application especially in the Operating System level, have what is known as an API [Application Programming Interface] which is normally used by 3rd party elements to extend the Software capabilities e.g Networking,Database e.t.c. problem comes in when malicious persons, script kiddies, thrill seeking nerds exploit such interfaces [read API] by developing malicious applications/software either for financial or thrill seeking gains e.t.c which then are classified as Viruses, Bugs,…..

This hits windows based systems mostly due to the fact that, windows OS’s are “closed” systems, meaning they are developed by a select body i.e Microsoft, thus testing, vetting e.t.c for production is done by this body, which theoretically and technically can’t be able to actually pin-point all flaws in their systems leaving it to the general public, end-users, geeks, nerds, e.t.c to exploit it! That is why they normally keep updating the “service packs” [mostly after discovering flaws from users]. While on the other hand systems like Linux, Solaris are big time open source, and maintained by a non-profit institution [GNU/GPL].Developed by a team of software geeks, from virtually all corners of the world, giving them an edge over Windows when it comes to security. I believe that there’s no silver bullet when it comes to security, so whether Windows,Mac, or Linux! security flaws are always anticipated.

Convincing Take on the issue. . . All the same. .. . I think there is alot of money in the virus -Antivirus-User web. . . . . .and seeing as the engines in the various antivirus products are sometimes shared, Then I think there is a particular group of individuals who love windows to bits . . . for financial reasons. . . Just my thots. . .
