Ipod touch 3G? aint that an iPhone? not a fan of the form factor of the 7 inch tablets, feels like an oversized phone or an underdeveloped tablet. . but I agree with the walled garden crap by Apple. its like its designed for babies. Anyhoo they have user experience locked own, cant bash them on that. Cool stuff you are doing though!

Long live CyanogenMod! The IDEOS is a real piece of crap... but it's amazing that the community has done with it. ;)

I started helping with the CyanogenMod 7 port for IDEOS because I wanted to learn about Android's build system, practice my git fu, etc... it was a lot of fun, and I think the product is pretty damn good considering it was done on 100% volunteer time. Huawei didn't help with any of it!! ;)

References from my blog (notes about compiling Android, setting up the build environment, etc):

I own an iPod Touch 3G and, while I appreciate the fact that it "just works," I hate the walled garden. The fact that Apple tells me what I can and cannot do with my hardware. Grrr.

I've been lucky that all the Android devices I've ever bought have had unlocked bootloaders (never owned an HTC or Motorola, bastards!). Flash any kernel you'd like. Root it. Erase the system partition, etc. ;). Also, the Android environment is easier to tweak due to the source being open. I'm not an Android fanboy by any means, but it is a nicer place to be I think.

btw, I just bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. It's a bit expensive in Kenya, but whatever. The hardware's amazing, and there will be software support for it for years to come (either official or unofficial, due to the existence of open-source CPU and GPU drivers for its hardware). It's still on Honeycomb... I can't wait to unleash Ice Cream Sandwich on it.

Adios!

Ubuntu is good (especially for people starting out in Linux) but I personally recommend Mandriva (2010.2 & above).

Hi Irungu,

For the sound it may be the sound card has a proprietary driver and thus Ubuntu needs you to authorize it to download and install it. It also doesn't support MP3 and other formats out of the box due to copyright issues and laws but they are easily downloadable. Try Linux Mint its a variant of Ubuntu and it comes with all the codecs so even the live cd should be able to play.

i have been using it (ubuntu 11.10 ) but as a live cd. the only problem with it is the sound. not a single player has sound let alone played any of the formats most of my files come in. how did you solve it? or do i have to fully install it?
